The market down at Pike's Place is full of charm and many colorful, yummy things. For breakfast, I got a pumpkin cookie that was as big as my face!!
Phil got a donut from this place...
We got a coffee at the original Starbucks that is the only one allowed to have the original, controversial logo hanging outside.
As we meandered around downtown, we came upon a bizarre-looking building. The architecture was spectacular. It turned out to be their public library, so of course, we went in to take a tour! It has great reading areas, an incredible children's section, a funky 5th floor that is completely red, and 4 stories of books that you can walk through via a spiral path.
Here is a view of their 10th floor. That's right, they have a 10th floor.
And the outside...
We took the monorail back to the Inn at Queen Anne.
We packed up, checked out, and piled into the car. (At the check-out, the guy at the front desk seemed unsurprised and unfazed that our tub ceiling had produced another shower source.)
Then we were off to Spokane to revisit Phil's childhood--kindergarten through 3rd grade--to see all the huge things that he remembered. We drove out to his old house. The house, the grove of trees, the hill behind it were all still there and beautiful, although not as big as Phil remembered.
Visited the huge park that had a bronze goat that would suck up your garbage through its mouth. It also seemed a little bit smaller.
We then walked over to Spokane Falls, which was flowing hard and filling the air with mist. The waterfall was pretty big! Ironically, Phil did not remember it being so grand.
This was a plaque posted by the falls. If you will turn your attention to the caption in the middle... What?!
Our final stop in Spokane was the visit the burger place that was the source of so many good memories for Phil with his Dad. We drove up to Dick's and it looked exactly as Phil remembered it. We chowed down on a cheeseburger, whammie (2 patties, 2 cheese), fries, and a chocolate shake. And of course, the burgers weren't quite as big as they used to be.
We ended our day of travelling in Kellogg, Idaho--a small ski resort town. Tomorrow...the glaciers!
Alright so maybe the proportions were a bit different for Phil-wup....when he was 6 y.o. ...like particularly the goat was perceived as H-U-G-E....as he approached it with great speculation and guard....alright so maybe he screamed...wow the GOAT....one of Spokane's treasures!
ReplyDeleteThe best picture was the double whammy & Aurelia.

I loved the picture of Aurelia looking up at her Dad with the burger. I dont remember Dicks. Glad the goat is still there! Was there still an amusement park? Did you find Casablancas and the 747? =) The house did not look the same....wasnt it red and 2 story?
ReplyDeleteP.S. White People RULE! (Keith says...)
ReplyDeletewhat an amazing day you had! it's so neat that you remembered and tracked down those places. i want to throw away trash into a goat's mouth and have a plaque acknowledge my birth.
